One morning as I was preparing for some study, I just opened my Bible “randomly”, getting ready for study, and it fell open at the book of Obadiah.
My eyes immediately went to verses 1-9 (as it is only a one chapter book.)
1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord GOD concerning Edom– We have heard a report from the LORD, And an envoy has been sent among the nations saying, “Arise and let us go against her for battle”–
2 “Behold, I will make you small among the nations; You are greatly despised.
3 “The arrogance of your heart has deceived you, You who live in the clefts of the rock, In the loftiness of your dwelling place, Who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to earth?’
4 “Though you build high like the eagle, Though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD.
5 “If thieves came to you, If robbers by night– O how you will be ruined!– Would they not steal only until they had enough? If grape gatherers came to you, Would they not leave some gleanings?
6 “O how Esau will be ransacked, And his hidden treasures searched out!
7 “All the men allied with you Will send you forth to the border, And the men at peace with you Will deceive you and overpower you. They who eat your bread Will set an ambush for you. (There is no understanding in him.)
8 “Will I not on that day,” declares the LORD, “Destroy wise men from Edom And understanding from the mountain of Esau?
9 “Then your mighty men will be dismayed, O Teman, So that everyone may be cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter.
I especially noted 2b-4, and my heart melted. I fell in prayer for our nation. Not that God will come to the side of America, but that America will once again come along side of God.
America is greatly despised among the nations. And our arrogance has deceived us. America does live in the “clefts of the rocks” in the secured areas. History, however, has shown that we have been falsely “secure” in our location; December 7, 1941, and 9/11 changed all of that.
But still, we say in our hearts, “Who will bring us down?” And we are the “eagle.” And even though we have “set our nest among the stars” I greatly fear that God will bring us down.
I know this prophecy was for the nation of Edom, but it brought a chilling discovery to my heart. If God would not spare Edom, will He spare America?
As in the book of Haggai, we have been “sent” with a purpose. But we have gotten fat, and lazy, and self-centered. And now our nation is crumbling from the inside out.
We ourselves have fulfilled verses 1-4; oh that God will spare us from the fulfilling of verses 5-9!
Oh God, I pray for a revival in this nation, that we may once again hear the voice of the Lord! As Amos 8:11 prophesied, we are indeed in a famine of hearing Your Word. Have mercy, O Lord. Have mercy! Amen.
Had the same experience this morning reading Obadiah. Prayed about what Edom could mean if Obadiah’s prophecy includes America among its meanings. Here’s what occurred to me.
Hebrews says, “that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.” (Hebrews 12:16, ESV)
This is the cultural and economic trajectory of the U.S., especially in recent decades. From individual cultural trends to national fiscal policy, we have sold the future for immediate gratification. We have become unholy, trading God’s calling for the nation–to be a place of refuge for others in oppression–in order to use our privileged place to actually use resources that others needed . The culture of licentiousness is part of that, but the problem has wider implications.
Obadiah’s words speak to America, because we have become “like Esau” according to Hebrews 12:16.
I had the same experience this morning reading Obadiah. I thought of America as I was reading and then when I finished I went to the computer and this site is what I found. I noticed that every year starting from the person who first posted has blog, God has bought this to his believers attention [2012, 2013, and now with me 2014]. We are in the third year and the hour of our Lord dealing with America. God please have mercy upon your people. I pray that every wobbly knee would bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord! and that all will come to know who He is soon. Just call out to Jesus and confess sins and know he is the Son of God, be made whole and set free in Jesus name amen.
Today I wanted to read something I never read and as I read I thought of America in the same manner as you. The same scriptures popped out at me. I will pray for revival and humbility in this country.
The same verse popped out to me. Never remembered reading it before.
I totally thing obidiah is talking about the United States. To put into context Edomites would not let isrealites pass thru there land and that kind of arrogance is definitely the United States. It that book he describes the eagle who puts his nest above the stars which def us and how the people we have in the country will cause a wound under us which would mean the people we allow in this country who we say are our friends and they totally will destroy us. Wolves in sheep’s clothing. And a interesting word was used in that book. Confederacy was used in that book which I find astonishing cause the only confederacy I’ve ever seen or heard of was the united states when we became a nation. I feel that no doubt that obidiah is talking about the fall of the united States. Even says we side up with people who are against which lately has started to unfold. Amazing how accurate our bibles are and how god speaks to us thru his word.
Thank you for your comment. Interestingly enough, our Women’s Bible study just studied Obadiah this week! Here is a link to the YouTube video of our live stream. https://youtu.be/2nJeCFpKC2I
