Subtitle: “When the Ground Gives ‘Way Beneath You”
This is a six-week study that covers the time from the (Last) supper to the (First) sunrise of the Resurrection. This was originally written and taught as a Lenten Study, but would be great for anytime to look closely at how the events in the last days of Jesus’ life played out.
This study includes (as always) lots of handouts and “take home” information.
This is how the “bulletin insert” for this study described it:
I seldom have nightmares, but when I do, the theme seems to be the same: I am in an elevator that is falling, and I have no control.
“Out of control…” None of us want to be out of control of life and circumstances, but alas, often we are. From uprisings in the Middle East to Somali pirates; from economic woes to nature’s fury; from illness and disease to lying tongues, “we” have no control. But, the question is: What do you do when life seems “out of control”? Where do you find your footing as the ground gives ‘way?
Join us for a 6-week Lenten study where we will take an in depth look at a very familiar story as we examine what took place from (Maundy) Thursday night to (Easter) Sunday morning, and ask, “Where do we find our footing when the ground gives ‘way beneath us?”
The ground beneath the disciples’ feet certainly seemed to be giving away. They had been through a very stressful week as Jesus had entered Jerusalem in, what seemed to be, a triumphant way, only to spend the week doing verbal battle with the Scribes, Pharisees, and Sadducees. Upon leaving the Temple on Wednesday evening, Jesus said to the Pharisees, “For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the Name of the Lord!”
The disciples knew that this was one verse of the “Hallel” (from Psalm 118) which would be sung during the Passover just two days from then. Think of how excited they must have been. Jesus was finally going to reveal His Messiahship! Then, think of how surprised they were when during the Supper, He donned a towel and washed their feet, admonishing them to become “servants of one another.” Think of how puzzled they must have been when He changed the ending of the Passover meal and said that He wouldn’t drink of “the cup” again until “the Kingdom of God comes.” Then imagine their fear when He was arrested… The earth indeed, began to “give ‘way” beneath them. Things were not going according to plan!
How often has the very earth beneath your feet given away as you faced doubts and fears? What did you do… or… what are you doing? Set aside time on your calendar to join us as we study what happens “From (the Last) Supper to (the First) Sunrise.”
